SUMMARY

Manual “Infectious Diseases of Dogs” is written by the author's team:

The manual summarizes the results of own research on certain infectious diseases of dogs and modern literary data of native and foreign authors.

Each disease is described according to the scheme, which contains the characteristics of the pathogen, pathogenesis, epizootological data, main clinical signs, pathological and anatomical changes and diagnosis. Using literary data and analyzing own research, the authors clearly set priorities for the infectious diseases treatment and prevention. In the case of highly contagious diseases there are offered means of struggle and prevention in shelters, hotels and nurseries.

Better perception and understanding of the material provides a large number of photographs, drawings and schemes that complement the theoretical material of each section.

The manual consists seven sections and applications. Each section includes a description of infectious diseases characterized by similar clinical features. Also, when forming the section, the authors paid attention on certain types of pathogens causing infectious diseases.

The first section consists of two divisions: 1.1.

“Infectious diseases belonging to the group “cough in nurseries” and 1.2. “Tuberculosis of dogs”. Section 1.1. includes “Dog Adenoviruses”, “Dog Bordetelosis" and “Dog parainfluenza”. These diseases have a different etiology, but they run through associations and have clinical signs that are characteristic of infectious laryngotracheitis.

Section 1.2 fully reveals the topic of tuberculosis, includes data from foreign authors on pathogenesis and pathological and anatomical changes in this disease, and emphasizes the importance of prevention means for this zoonosis.

The second section of the manual “Infectious diseases characterized by liver damage” includes “Viral hepatitis of carnivores” and “Dog's leptospirosis”. These diseases combine similar clinical signs associated with functional and structural disorders of the liver.

In the third section, “Diseases accompanied by CNS deficiency”, the characteristic of infectious diseases accompanied by nervous phenomena is given. This section contains two divisions: first 3.1. “Viral Diseases” includes “Dog rabies”, “Aujeszky's Disease”, “Plague of Dogs”. Because rabies of dogs is especially dangerous zoonoses, means of struggle and prevention of this disease are provided on the basis of the current legislation of Ukraine.

Second subdivision 3.2. “Clostridiosis” includes “Tetanus” and “Botulism”. These diseases are caused by clostridia, characterized by the damage of the central nervous system due to the action of neurotoxins, which provoke nervous phenomena.

In the fourth section, “Infectious diseases characterized by signs of gastrointestinal tract infections”, the combined topical diseases of young dogs “Viral diseases of young puppies” (subsection 4.1): “Parvovirus enteritis”, “Coronavirus enteritis” and “Diseases, caused by the bacteria of the Enterobacter family”(subsection 4.2), which includes “Salmonella” and “Colibacteriosis”.

Section 5. “Diseases characterized by clinical polymorphism” includes the following diseases: “Herpesvirus infection”, “Dog's borreliosis”, “Chlamydiosis of dogs”, “Dog's mycoplasmosis”, “Streptococcosis of dogs”, “Staphylococcosis of dogs”, “Pasteurleozes of dogs”.

This section combines diseases caused by different types of pathogens: spirochetes, viruses, chlamydia, mycoplasmas, bacteria. The commonality of all these diseases is the absence of a typical clinical picture; defeat of various organs and systems depending on age, resistance of the organism, immunity, methods of infection, genetic predisposition and other factors providing various clinical manifestations.

“Mycoses of dogs” - the sixth section, which contains infectious diseases caused by fungus: “Dermatomycosis”, “Nocardiosis”, “Actinomycosis”, “Malassezioz”.

In the seventh section, “General principles of vaccination”, the issues of immunity, peculiarities of vaccination in puppies are considered; provided advice on the preparation of puppies for immunization.

Eighth section “Appendices” includes the characteristics of individual vaccines for dogs, drugs for passive immunization and specific treatment and certain disinfectants. References number 60 information sources.

The manual is recommended for higher education graduates and may be interesting for practitioners of veterinary medicine, dog owners, hotel owners, refuges and nurseries.
